STIM.bio is the research home for Stasis Through Inevitable Mayhem, a protocol that translates biological resilience into robust system design.
Core Observation
Born from the observation that the most durable systems in nature are not static; they are dynamically stable. The cell maintains protein homeostasis not by avoiding misfolding but by detecting it, correcting it, and clearing it, continuously. That process is the Unfolded Protein Response (UPR).
Our work draws on three analytical traditions:
- Plant biochemistry: Smilax species produce brassinosteroid analogues (Laxogenin), flavonoids (Astilbin), and steroidal saponins that modulate the same stress pathways in mammalian cells that they regulate in their own tissues. This is xenohormesis: stress-response chemistry transfer across kingdoms.
- Proteostatic medicine: ER stress, UPR dysregulation, and the resulting inflammatory cascades are emerging as root-cause explanations for complex syndromes (MCAS, Morbihan disease, FPIES) that have historically been treated symptomatically.
- Ecological design: Forest and soil systems maintain resilience through redundancy, diversity, and layered feedback. The same principles apply to platform architecture and organizational design.
